It is most often used to help with particular health conditions in women. In fact, dong-quai root has been called in many circles the ginseng for women, due to its use to alleviate the symptoms of some gynecological disorders. For example, it is useful in some women for cramps and painful menstruation. It also can help a women to feel better after childbirth and for general fatigue and stress.

Some women also find that it can support heart health and help to support normal blood pressure. It also has been shown to be helpful to reduce symptoms of PMS.

This root does not contain steroids or hormone molecules, but it does contain coumarin. This ingredient is known for its ability to help prevent blood clots. Coumarin also is believed to have both anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects on the female reproductive system.

Don quai also has ferulic acid, which is a mild pain reliever and relaxer. This herb is often used to help with cramping and muscle spasms in the uterus. It also is thought to be a general muscle relaxant. As the uterus is primarily made of muscle, dong quai stimulates it and the uterus can become tighter and contract more easily.

This root seems to help the uterus as it does all muscles. The muscles of the body work better when they are properly toned, and with the uterus this is also true. Ferulic acid also seems to help relax muscle fibers in the heart, which can help with high blood pressure and with cardiac arrhythmias.

Dong quai also has shown to be somewhat effective to assist with allergy and upper respiratory symptoms. It is thought that some of the chemical agents in the root can have both an antihistamine and an anti serotonin effect. These are the substances released from our blood cells in response to an irritant in the environment, which cause the symptoms we associate with allergies.

Background

Donq quai became popular in Europe in the late 19th century, as an extract of this herb called Eumenol became very popular in Europe to help women with gynecological issues. In recent years, there has been more interest in Dong quai in the West, as it is believed to have a positive effect on women’s bodies due to its properties that seem to affect estrogen in limited ways.

In herbal medicine in China, this root is used the most in combination with many other herbs. It is thought that it can help with liver and spleen issues in both men and women.
